Kohala is calling everyone with connections to the northern district of the Big Island to a four-day celebration during the Fourth of July weekend.
The giant homecoming takes place every five years — this is the fourth.Families of Kohala residents, former and current residents, high school graduates, everyone with connections to the district are invited to celebrate the rich history of the area with music, local foods, tours and exhibits.
Kohala kupa‘a, “Kohala steadfast,” is the motto for the events scheduled for July 3-6 at Kamehameha Park in Kapaau. Times are 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday.
Daily exhibits, lectures, demonstrations, hula and musical performances, and guided and self-guided tours of historical places will connect to Kohala’s past, present and future.
The homegrown celebration is supported by early registration of families in Kohala and away, T-shirt sales, donations, sponsorship by the North Kohala Community Resource Center, and grants from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the Hawaii County Council, with the assistance of Councilwoman Margaret Wille.
